Computerworld - WORCESTER, Mass. -- In the first two days of the NASA robotics challenge this week, every team failed. Every. Single. Team. NASA officials and roboticists were disappointed, but not shocked, at the less-than-spectacular results at yesterday's NASA robotics challenge -- even though researchers from the likes of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI ...

Recycle Paper? Plastic? Glass? Nope. Robot ERO Can Recycle Buildings!

Fri, 2014-06-13 01:30
Ever seen a building get demolished? Well, it looks a little like this: heavy machinery is used to crush the building to pieces. Fire hoses spray lots of water around to prevent clouds of harmful dust from rising into the air. Big machines then scoop up chunks of crumpled rebar (the metal structures inside the concrete), and often head straight for the nearest landfill. Basically, demolition is ...

Meet the Cute, Wellies-Wearing, Wikipedia-Reading Robot That's Going to Hitchhike Across Canada

Thu, 2014-06-12 14:56
When I first heard about hitchBOT, I figured it was a joke, or perhaps a thought experiment by Frauke Zeller, a roboticist at Ryerson University in Canada.  Zeller and a large team including co-creator David Harris Smith of McMaster University, are going to put their cute little bot on the side of the road in Halifax and hope that somehow the robot can talk its way to Victoria.

Autonomous Robots to Battle for $1.5 Million NASA Prize

Tue, 2014-06-10 17:49
NASA is offering $1.5 million in prize money this week to inventors who build a robot that can successfully navigate a mock-alien landscape and scoop up geologic samples without any help from human controllers. While current robotic space explorers like NASA's Mars rover Curiosity can do some work on their own, they are largely reliant on commands from operators sitting in control rooms on Earth ...
