I had to smile when I read Mr. Gates' account of his visits to leading universities. He stated, "Almost without exception, I was shown at least one project that involved robotics." In the field of Laboratory Automation we design and apply diverse technologies for the purpose of introducing new capabilities and improving productivity in scientific laboratories. Robotics is by far the one technology that garners the broadest attention. Robot systems that move vials, pipette substances, and perform tests of all kinds on the behalf of scientists, are almost always the highlight of VIP tours like those that Mr. Gates mentioned. Whenever possible, laboratories that are dedicated to robotics are constructed with viewing windows solely for the purpose of accommodating these tours. It is no wonder that robotics is becoming a powerful "vehicle" for improving education in Computer Science and other fields.
