I had to smile when I read Mr. Gates' account of his visits to leading universities. He stated, "Almost without exception, I was shown at least one project that involved robotics." In the field of Laboratory Automation we design and apply diverse technologies for the purpose of introducing new capabilities and improving productivity in scientific laboratories. Robotics is by far the one technology that garners the broadest attention. Robot systems that move vials, pipette substances, and perform tests of all kinds on the behalf of scientists, are almost always the highlight of VIP tours like those that Mr. Gates mentioned. Whenever possible, laboratories that are dedicated to robotics are constructed with viewing windows solely for the purpose of accommodating these tours. It is no wonder that robotics is becoming a powerful "vehicle" for improving education in Computer Science and other fields.

I agree with what Bill Gates says in the article. For sure the consumer robots are very basic in functionalities. But it would only get better and more affordable. I hope the technology can improve like the pace of PC. I hope in the not too distant future, every family would be able to afford at least one robot that can help do all the domestic chores as well as be a nice companion. Someone that I can talk to, like in the movie Bicentenial Man.

I agree with Mr. Bill Gates too, I believe that technologies such as wireless, distributed, voice and visual recognition, and broadband connectivity will be used in robotic future, I think one robots=one future pc, have OS, memory, CPU and more, MS will provide one Robot OS :? :), it is fun.

I think robots in the near future will think like humans. But robots can't cry, bleed or feel like humans, and that's part of what makes them different :)

robots are already here you crazy people

Robots already massively dominate our consumer driven lives, They build almost everything, there is robotic production lines building computers cars and everything. All we are missing is robotic people... it wont be long !

Robots patrolling our streets in 30 years time? Seems like a bit more of a leap than with the home computer.
